Mailchimp already forced you to rebuild your automations once.
Classic Automations got retired. Journey Builder replaced it — and for a lot of senders, "migrated" meant recreating multi-step workflows by hand, on Mailchimp's timeline, not theirs. Here's why that happens on rented infrastructure, and what actually changes when you own the platform instead.
What happened
Mailchimp deprecated its original Automations builder in favor of Customer Journey Builder — a different editor, a different model for how triggers and steps connect. Simple, single-trigger automations mostly carried over. Anything more involved — the multi-step welcome series, the re-engagement flow, the abandoned-cart sequence with branches — didn't migrate itself. Senders had to open the new builder and put those workflows back together, trigger by trigger, from scratch.
Nobody asked for this rebuild. It arrived because Mailchimp decided to change how automations work, and every customer running the old system inherited that decision the moment it shipped.
Why it happens on rented infrastructure
This isn't really a story about one product decision. It's what SaaS ownership always looks like eventually: the vendor's roadmap is your roadmap. When they redesign a core feature, you don't get a vote — you get a migration deadline. It's the same mechanism behind the price increases and the shrinking free tiers. You're not a customer of a piece of software; you're a tenant of someone else's decisions about that software.
What ownership actually changes
Keepori runs on Listmonk, which is open source. The version you're running keeps running exactly as configured — same automations, same workflows, same interface — until you choose to upgrade it. Nobody redesigns the automation builder out from under you on a Tuesday and calls it progress. If a future version changes something you rely on, you decide when, or whether, to move to it.
That's the actual difference between owning infrastructure and renting it: not just the monthly bill, but who gets to decide when your working setup stops working.
Worried a migration to us breaks what you've already built?
We rebuild and test your existing campaigns and automations before your first live send on Keepori — not after. You see it working before you commit to it.
